Friends, I looked at CNN to see if millions marched in America on Saturday to protest Iraq and George Bush and his friends. CNN hardly mentioned the protests which means that they fell far short of expectations. How disappointing. Unfortunately, People Power needs lots of people!
In my post Only Humans I made the comment that perhaps all the problems in the world today are caused by genetic and/or instinct-based deficiencies within us. It's a fear I've had for a long, long time.
It's rather like we are all born with a Trojan Horse inside us, one that, given the right (or is it wrong?) circumstances, releases destructive forces that inevitably undermine and bring us down both individually and as a species. The brilliant image shown above (click to enlarge) graphically illustrates my point!
We may well be our own worst enemies, destined to fail forever until, eventually, we the naked apes, destroy ourselves.
What do you think?

CNN would not report the march even IF millions of people showed up.
About six thousand people marched on Washington (or so I read). One hundred fifty were arrested.
I did not march since it does not do a damn bit of good. It makes more sense to stop buying things --hit them in the wallet by not buying anything--than to try and do a nice, neat, approved, march supervised by policemen and then going home.
If marching 'does not do a damn bit of good' Blacks in the south would still be in separate schools from the whites, riding at the back of the bus to get to them...
The US involvement in Vietnam would be continuing to this very day...
Senior citizens would not have a Social Security check to look forward to every month....
I can go on and on....
Never say 'Never' Nancy.
The Nature V Nurture debate has gone on for as long as i can remember and I come down on the side of Nurture. I do not believe we are inherently programmed to do bad things to each other, it is a mix of our social influences and upbringing that shape us. Parents, peers and our life experiences mould us into the adults we become.
I like LucyP's comments...You already know that sex sells regardless of its value...Bush will be gone soon and so will Howard...In terms of life's history they are a blip on the radar, and so are we....nancy talking about one and fifty arrests from 6 thousand is a very good percentage, but I wondered how severely they'll be punished in America given their horrific home security legislation...which I believe does have a shelf life, unlike Australia.
I believe public demonstration do affect outcomes, but Government don't want to acknowledge their value for fear of starting a fashion trend. Public Rallies are not always for the feint hearted, but you do have to be committed....
i think that we are well on our way to destroying ourselves. one can always fight one form of totalitarian government or other. the world has since humans began sentiently congregating. what we don't have is time. the global warming crisis will not allow much wiggle room for fighting the fascist hordes who are hell bent on a one world government. so- here we are. the only peace i have is knowing that when we are gone- the planet has a shot of redoing things. or getting blown to smithereens by an asteroid. whichever comes first.
I have always been in Lucy's camp but now I'm firmly in Betmo's.
I believe that we are born with strong instincts that prompt us towards violence, lust, greed, depravity, cruelty, etc. They are probably part of our primitive nature and once ensured our survival as a species. The Lord of the Flies documents this well!
What has and/or is happening in Darfur and the Palestinian Territories and Iraq seems to provide case studies in man's enduring gross inhumanity to man.
Just my thoughts!
Now, with nuclear weapons, they threaten our survival.
Daniel I strongly disagree with you Humanity I believe has long ago found a degree of civilisation that enables us to live in relative harmony.
Exactly the opposite to your expressed sentiments I believe most people are born reasonably well adjusted, but circumstances can create the beast of survival instincts within them. This happens when rich nations try to expound their superiority about definition of health, wealth, morals, religion and happiness.
I know I am sick to death with all the religious opportunism that invades our everyday living, but for others that's their individual choice. Not mine, but I am agreeable to them being different.
When did this 'relative harmony' take place, Mary? I'm not aware of any period of history where this actually occurred.
And circumstances surely cannot create something that isn't already there at least in part!
It's an interesting topic and I'm sure there will be strong views both pro and con. Cheers.
Many 1000's marched,(many more than 6000), and some photos were amazing...miles and miles of people- we have a Media Blackout here don't you know? yup...no aerials are or were shown...and no photos in papers and barely coverage- go to Left of Centrist this week and he will have video and footage...
If I can find some decent aeriel photos I know how to do estimates ( took a class on it)....
thanks for mentioning us...better than MSM here...
Enigma, if millions had shown up the media would've been all over it.
This is not to minimize the efforts of those brave people who did turn up but to get rid of Bushco in a hurry it requires massive public agitation and protest.
I was happy to give what help I could!
P.S. Our APEC Protests were pathetic too. People fell for the fear campaign run by the Government!
If you all focus on the negative, that's all you will see.
Marching NOW does not do a damn bit of good.
A hundred thousand people showed up. I had to read about it on Al-Jazeera! There was no coverage at all.
The gov. have learned how to deal with the protesters. Ignore 'em. Didn't they call a million people in the street in 2003 a 'focus group'?
The only thing they understand is money.
I'm sure that right-wing governments are only too well aware of what a combination of fear and force and the threat of severe punishment can achieve should their citizens show signs of rebellion.
It's not a matter of looking for the negatives but how to deal effectively with such negatives! Any ideas?
