This question has just popped into my mind. Is it worth sharing? You judge.
Of course, there are some very fine humans. A few. Some of them associate with this blog in a meaningful rather than manipulative way.
But what of the rest of mankind? If tomorrow, every human disappeared from the face of the world, what difference would it make? The sun would rise in the east and set in the west. Animals, insects, birds and ocean life would continue as if nothing had happened. The environment would gradually recover (hundreds of thousands of years at least) from its unfortunate exposure to dirty, greedy, destructive humans.
We are an unfortunate accident! We are a combination of the worst the animal kingdom has to offer combined with touches of the....
Can I bring myself to say it...? Divine. There. Only tiny touches mind you! A ratio of...say, about 98% to 2%.
What? An atheist talking about the divine? Must've been the wine I had with lunch.

ARE HUMANS WORTH SAVING?

I've always had this thought Daniel is the reason man fights so hard about God is because he himself is so arrogant that we must be different to the rest of the animal kingdom.
And because everyone needs a "role model" in their life because we're incapable of thinking for ourselves Jesus Christ, who is not here to defend himself was a likely person in past history to hang the responsibility on.
What really scares me is the level of intelligence that could even consider so much of the story of the Bible as factual.....If one delves only into recent Catholicism how Mortal Sins are no longer so.....The whole concept of religion makes animals look like the really intelligent beings...they live for the moment and seize every day as if it were their last.....the love their kids and they don't make wars...they just squabble until the weaker one leaves, but mostly unless you're to be eaten, you're quite safe with the animal...
The same cannot be said of man!
Are we worth saving? Who will save us from ourselves? We kill and destroy so much of what we come in contact with? At the end of the day I believe we will be on our own facing the consequences of our own stupidly...but not in my lifetime I'm thinking...not quite yet...but very interesting times are ahead with the Middle East ongoing inability to share resources.....

Dear Dan! Hey! I think this often and I(sadly/hope)that ignorant people will be wiped off this earth just as they have been before.
Unfortunately though,the earth with take longer to recover the next time around....but she will! She is amazingly strong and versatile although it wont be to the pristine state we were endowed with. How sad :~(
On a commonsence note....One Taurean to another! Be prepared for survival and free from the 'system'(financially/structualyand mentally)and there may indeed be people who continue to pass on their love and protection of the earth and will be true to their 'community'(whatever that may be) in the future.
I "feel" that that will happen, a kind of selection/survival of the fittest.....people who are deserving of inheriting and caring again about the earth will indeed go on.....and if we don't I will sure as hell die trying!
The future is very bleak until the earth is inoculated of the virus.....

I'm not so sure about whether our lifetime is that safe, not while Bush and Co are in town. Your thoughts on religion I share fully! Even animals are not that dumb. Cheers.

Daniel, I share your feelings. I often think what a relief and a cleansing it would be to Earth and nature if the sun rose morning with no humans left on Earth.
I see humans as a part of nature, like other animals, but as somehow infected, innately destructive and gratuitously cruel. War seems to have been the natural state of most humans from the tribal beginnings.
It's odd, but the infection may be a bit of the divine, as you say . . . only not enough. Or it may be the runaway evolution of intelligence in an apelike creature that can't handle it.
Forgive me for advertising, but I really think you would find my recent post on FLIGHTS OF PEGASUS, "Feline Philosophy", to be apropos.

daniel and naj- had no idea that you all were fellow taureans! good stuff! i was talking to my mother about this very thing the other day- so i guess we three were on the same astrological brainwave! :) this is the only thing that has brought me a measure of peace. i have stopped trying to save the world. we are a species that is destroying itself. oh well. once the earth is decimated of any life- it hopefully can begin anew- and quite frankly- who knows if that hasn't happened already? without people, the earth can renew- and hey- maybe a better species of humans can evolve. no divine there.
I've pretty well given up trying to bring about change, myself, Betmo. It's strange how many humans embrace the worst aspects of our nature while the bulk just don't care, just go with the flow.
This world could be such a great place but the LCD prevails!

Sometimes acceptance of the reality of who and what we are is the only option, Worried. Bashing one's head against a brick wall achieves little!
I believe that 2% divinity - or even 0.1% - is well worth saving and nurturing in mankind, without the aid of an external deity.
